How the scores work
- Ease of getting in: free movement scores 100, a route only some passports get 78, routes without a job offer 58, job-offer-only 28. Visit rules make up 20%.
- Path to settle: years to permanent residence and citizenship, with a bonus for dual citizenship.
- Cost of living: World Bank price level (US = 100) and income per person adjusted for prices. Budgets add an estimated rent.
- Safety: homicide rate (70%) and absence of political violence (30%).
- Stability: the World Bank's governance indicators for political stability, rule of law, control of corruption and government effectiveness.
- Family-friendliness: children's health and schooling (Human Capital Index), under-5 mortality, life expectancy, health spending, safety and stability.
Sources and limits
Visit rules come from the open Passport Index dataset. Prices, income, safety, governance and family indicators come from World Bank open data (CC BY 4.0). Visa routes and timelines were checked against government sites and 2026 reporting. Rents and budget splits are estimates. Flags: country-flag-icons (MIT).
Immigration rules change often. Check the official immigration authority before you apply. Each country's page shows when it was last checked.
